Dr. Woutijn J. Baars

Woutijn is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology, within the sections of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. In 2009, he graduated from Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) with a M.Sc. degree in aerodynamics, where he studied the effects of icing on the stability of aircraft. In 2013 he received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Austin (U.S.A.). At UT Austin his research work comprised studies of propulsive jet flows and the unsteady aerodynamics in rocket-type exhaust nozzles, with a specific focus on the sources of high-intensity noise emitted from these types of systems. After his Ph.D. he became a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne (Australia), where he made contributions to the physical understanding of high-Reynolds-number wall-bounded flows, which is vital for manipulation of the viscous drag force acting on transportation systems, e.g. planes, trains and ships. In 2019 he became a Lecturer at RMIT University (Australia) and subsequently an Assistant Professor at Aarhus University (Denmark). Since his start at Delft in 2020, his research interests include passive manipulation of jet flows and their emitted noise, wall-bounded turbulence and passive/active methods for flow-control, and noise from multi-rotor systems (drones and urban aviation vehicles).
